History
Making great looking pictures isn't easy. It needs outstanding craft skills, creativity, appropriate technology—and a passion for moving images. If you're reading this, you share that passion with us, and we think you'll appreciate what we have to offer. Our no-compromise product range defines the standard for excellence in film scanning, colour grading and colour management.
Where we came from
Before FilmLight, we gathered a great deal of know-how in post-production, and we were making digital film sequences long ago. We met many like-minded people, and so we've been able to bring together an exceptional team—with many of the world's leading talents in software and hardware design for the post industry.
How it began
At the beginning we designed a film scanner specifically for the emerging DI market. The aim was to produce the ultimate image quality, and we also wanted to make the technology you spend your day with attractive, so we paid attention to aesthetics too. The result was the Northlight, which is now the gold standard in the film post-production industry.
Our second year saw the launch of the Baselight grading system. New multi-node technology and SD/HD/SAN connectivity have made Baselight successful in the general post-production market.
We then started to ship the Truelight colour management system, backed by a support team that really knows colour science. It's been adopted in nearly every major film post house all over the world.
Drawing on our experience in facilities, we decided to treat product support as a key marketing tool. To this day we have never sent anyone out on a service call who has not actually built the device they are supporting. peace of mind means you can concentrate on making beautiful pictures.
Today's values
In 2010, FilmLight's development team were honoured with four AMPAS Sci-Tech Awards across every one of our main product lines; we were also named London's Outstanding Exporter of the Year. This builds on the success we had in winning consecutive Queen's Awards for Enterprise in 2005 and 2006, and an award from the BKSTS for technical achievement in 2005. All are in our headquarters located at the heart of London's post-production industry in Soho.
We want to keep the values that made Northlight such a resounding success, so we write stable, highly productive software that runs on the best PC components, and if we need more performance, we develop our own hardware. Where there is a choice to be made, we always engineer for quality and reliability.
We've come a long way in a short time, with clients in over 20 countries throughout the world. Being a customer is still very fresh in our memory, so we try to stay personal and accessible and make our business easy to deal with. After all, this industry works hard, and what's the point if we don't all enjoy the process?
