Sony and FilmLight to Showcase Real-Time 4K Grading and Display at NAB

At the upcoming NAB Show (National Association of Broadcasters Convention), Sony and FilmLight will demonstrate grading and display of uncompressed 4K imagery in real-time. The demonstrations will be conducted at both the Sony booth (SU906) and the FilmLight booth (SL1405) and will involve FilmLight’s Baselight EIGHT colour grading system grading uncompressed 4K imagery for display via Sony’s SRX-S105 SXRD™ 4K projector. The combination provides a true 4K DI workflow allowing full resolution imagery to be viewed at 1:1 in real-time grading sessions.

With an increasing number of films being finished in 4K, the new workflow is a welcome advance for post-production houses seeking the capacity to deliver the ultimate in quality and creative flexibility. “This workflow completes a full real-time 4K grading pipeline,” said David Stroud, FilmLight Technical Marketing Manager. “Artists can see every pixel and hence all the detail of a complete 4K image stream, getting the full cinematic impact of watching it projected in real-time. The image quality and level of detail are exceptional. There is no comparison with other workflows that grade scaled or compressed proxies.”

Sony will use the new technology to demonstrate the capabilities of its SXRD projector and the breathtaking impact of 4K imagery. Installed in movie theatres across the world for digital cinema, the SXRD projectors deliver imagery at an unprecedented 4096×2160 resolution. The projector accepts input in a variety of formats, including HD-SDI, DVI and analogue, and also has multi-window capability that allows it to display up to four windows of full-resolution HD.

“Sony’s 4K SXRD projectors are being employed in a variety of ultra-high resolution applications, including post production,” said Andre Floyd, Marketing manager for SXRD Systems at Sony Electronics. “We are pleased that FilmLight has continued to develop their Baselight systems to provide the highest quality grading system for the highest quality of motion picture production and we are glad to provide a display system that allows the artists to see every detail that they will be delivering to their audiences.”

“Sony and FilmLight engineering teams have developed a great rapport and are continuing to develop solutions that will benefit our mutual customers,” said Stroud.

The new 4K display technology has already been installed at a number of high-end post-production houses in Europe and the USA.
