Baselight ‘the obvious choice’ for Crosspoint

Colorado’s longest running post-house, Crosspoint, required a dedicated colour grading system that would complete their services from start-to-finish, offering clients a non-linear SD to 2K workflow. The company selected Baselight, which enabled Crosspoint to fulfill their needs and ensure high quality projects faster and on-budget.

Founded in 1986, Crosspoint is the only telecine facility in the state. With three Avid® DS Nitris finishing suites, three Avid Media Composer and two Final Cut Pro editing suites, the company offers SD|HD editing, finishing, motion graphics, 3D animation, sound recording and duplication to CD, DVD, Blu-ray and most tape formats.

Crosspoint’s colourist Eric Anolin commented, “Dedicated colour grading has been the missing piece of the HD puzzle—not only at Crosspoint, but in the entire region. Our clients were also demanding a broader tool set with limitless creative options: a working environment on par with the West Coast post houses. FilmLight’s Baselight was the obvious choice.”

Over the last two years, Crosspoint arranged evaluations of a number of colour grading systems and found that Baselight provided the best solution for Avid and FCP integration including development for RED. The system also allowed Crosspoint an easy upgrade path from a Baselight ONE to a Baselight HD should they need to expand in the future.

“Baselight is our new HD colour grading tool. We’ve had the opportunity to work on some amazing projects and the system has proven itself every step of the way,” stated Anolin. “The best thing is that we are now able to solve most issues, for example lighting fixes using freehand shapes and tracker without having to leave the suite.”

The Baselight tool set also enables Crosspoint to: work with unlimited layers of colour and effects in SD and HD; EDL conform and timeline sort for grading spots in context prior to FX and conform in the Avid DS; and work in a completely non-linear environment.

In conjunction with an existing daVinci Renaissance hardware colour grading system, Crosspoint have positioned Baselight as a local resource for the Denver market where traditionally film clients would go to New York or Los Angeles for processing and Spirit telecine dailies. “We’re encouraging clients to break out of the all-in-one tool mentality. Placing Baselight as a local workflow for colour finishing will save travel costs for clients and allow for tighter schedules. We’ve also been very impressed with the level of support from FilmLight; their response to all our needs has been great considering we’re a small company in a small market running just one Baselight system,” concluded Anolin.

Since acquiring the system, Crosspoint have completed a number of projects for brands including Colorado Lottery, UNICEF, Pinnacle Bank, Polaris and Rocky Mountain Health Plans.
