Kodak Cinelab Selects FilmLight’s Baselight and Northlight for New DI Services

FilmLight today announces that Kodak Cinelabs Romania, which it is part of a worldwide network of Kodak-owned film processing laboratories and digital film transfer facilities, has invested in a Baselight FOUR colour grading system and a Northlight 2 film scanner. The systems will be installed in a newly-built digital intermediate grading theatre designed to service feature film, television and advertising clients, and scheduled to begin operations this summer.

Kodak Cinelabs has been seeking to add DI services as a complement to its traditional film laboratory services for some time. The company reviewed various colour grading and scanning options and chose the FilmLight solutions due to their quality, features and reputation.

“We want the best tools in the market,” says Kodak Technical Manager in Central & Eastern Europe, Jesus Haro. “We were impressed when we read that FilmLight developers were awarded four Sci-Tech Awards from the Motion Picture Academy and we were also impressed with the respect FilmLight enjoys among our customers.

“Customers come to us because of the trust they have in Kodak and the high quality services we provide at our facilities. Our new Baselight colour grading system and Northlight scanner will allow us to provide a high-quality, comprehensive DI solution.”

The new DI theatre will be built at Kodak Cinelab’s facility in Bucharest, Romania, which will become the first Cinelab facility to offer digital intermediate services. The facility services film, television and commercial producers based in Eastern Europe as well as producers from outside the region who come to Eastern Europe to shoot their projects.

Baselight and Northlight will be integrated into a 10-Gigabit Ethernet network that will also include dust-busting systems and other digital processing resources. Ultimately, Kodak Cinelabs expects to add a central shared storage system as a boost to productivity and collaboration.

Haro notes that the DI theatre is central to Kodak Cinelabs’ broader plan to diversify its services. “We want to provide a service to our customers from capture through delivery,” he says. “Baselight and Northlight bring us much closer to our number one goal, which is to offer a complete solution to our customers.”

At NAB 2010, FilmLight will be demonstrating its products in the Paramount Suite at The Renaissance Las Vegas. The company will also be participating in technology demonstrations in conjunction with Sony Electronics (Booth C1101) and Glookast (Booth SL1429).
