Hollywood’s Chainsaw Adds Second Baselight

New grading system integrated into a file-based (Avid and FCP) workflow for television and features

FilmLight today announced that Chainsaw, the award-winning Hollywood post-production facility, has taken delivery of its second Baselight colour grading system. The company will use the new Baselight system to provide final colour grading services to its growing number of episodic television, long-form television and independent film clients.

To operate the new Baselight system, Chainsaw has hired colourist Kris Santa Cruz. Formerly of Prime Focus (Post Logic Studios), Hollywood, Santa Cruz had been working at Chainsaw on a freelance basis for several months and has numerous credits in television and independent film. Santa Cruz has already used Baselight to grade a project for the Hallmark Channel and will soon begin work on Sarah Palin’s Alaska, a new series from Mark Burnett Productions for TLC.

The system will help Chainsaw keep pace with a workload that is both growing and diversifying. “Chainsaw’s client base is broader today than it has been in the past; we are doing more long-form television and independent features,” noted Christina Ferreira, the company’s newly-appointed Vice President of Sales. “Baselight is important to our ability to service many different types of projects because it offers so many options. With Baselight, we can do anything.”

Baselight has been integrated into Chainsaw’s file-based workflow, one of the most sophisticated in Hollywood, allowing it to share access to data with the facility’s many creative editorial and editorial finishing suites (composed of both Avid and Final Cut Pro® systems). The company’s original Baselight is similarly integrated into the workflow and has been a great success, forming part of a complete post-production solution that provides significant time and cost savings and greatly enhanced creative flexibility over conventional post workflows.

Having two Baselight systems will give Chainsaw further creative and logistical flexibility. “The two rooms are identically configured and interconnected, so if one room is busy, we can pull a file or a session into the other room and continue working without skipping a beat,” mentioned Santa Cruz. “It helps us meet deadlines and provide the type of high-quality service our clients expect.”

Chainsaw partners Bill DeRonde and Mike Polito recently won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Picture Editing for a Special (Single or Multi-Camera) for the HBO special The 25th Anniversary Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Concert. Final grading for that project was done on Baselight at Chainsaw by colourist Andy Lichtstein.
