Filmlab India Selects FilmLight’s Truelight Projector Probe for New DI Service

Colour Management Tool to Calibrate Digital Projection System

Filmlab, one of India’s largest motion picture film laboratories, has become the first company worldwide to purchase the Truelight Projector Probe, FilmLight’s groundbreaking tool for calibrating digital projectors. The probe will be employed in Filmlab’s new Digital facility currently under construction in Mumbai and is expected to be operational in July concurrent with the launch of Filmlab Digital.

“We selected Truelight because it is without question the market leader in colour management technology,” said Henning Hahn CTO – Digital Imaging, Filmlab. “Eliminating any uncertainty with regard to colour management, the probe makes it easy to align digital and analog projectors.”

The Truelight Projector Probe will be an integral part of Filmlab Digital’s DI and Film Restoration workflows providing complete services for feature films and smaller projects produced in India and internationally. The probe will be used to calibrate the output from a JVC 10K projector in the DI cinema, to the film projector being used in Filmlab’s 20-seat preview theatre and ensure that the projected image of the JVC projector matches that of a film projector used in the facility’s “analog” cinema.

“The majority of our work is 2K and 4K,” said Henning, “and the Truelight Projector Probe does a wonderful job with cinema outputs.”

Truelight is quickly becoming the standard for colour management in India. In addition to Filmlab, Truelight is already employed by Indian post houses Quality Cine Labs, Digiquest Studio, Pixion and UTV Post. Prime Focus, India’s largest post production facility, is also integrating Truelight into its visual effects facilities.

Introduced at IBC 2006 in Amsterdam, the Truelight Projector Probe is the simplest to use tool ever developed for calibrating digital projectors. Calibration is accomplished via a point and shoot operation and can be performed without regard to angle or distance from the screen. Additionally, the probe can be used on its own for projector set up, projector quality control and Truelight calibration without the need for a separate spectrometer.

In addition to Filmlab, the Truelight Projector Probe has been purchased by Weta Digital (Wellington), Framestore CFC (London) and Digital Post (Auckland).
