Modern VideoFilm Adds Two NorthLight Scanners to Expand Digital Intermediate/Digital Cinema Mastering Services

FilmLight, pioneers of digital film technology, announced today that Modern VideoFilm, a leading Los Angeles post production facility, has purchased two Northlight film scanners to spearhead new high-resolution scanning and recording services. The Northlight scanners will be housed in a newly-built suite at the company’s Glendale Digital Cinema facility, where they will be first used in Digital Intermediate processes on upcoming feature films I, Robot for Twentieth Century Fox and Imaginary Heroes for Signature Pictures.

The Northlight scanners will augment the company’s existing datacine equipment. Modern VideoFilm President and CEO, Moshe Barkat, noted, “The trend with our studio clients is to push for higher and higher resolution scans which go well beyond what datacine equipment can handle. Also, because we work with visual effects companies, we have a growing need for pin registered transfers. The Northlight allows us to address both of these requirements. It had always piqued our interest – the mechanical concepts behind it are solid and innovative, and it can deliver the 6K scans our clients need.”

The company’s VP of Feature Post Production, Pat Repola, added, “The Northlight is the best scanner available, in terms of image quality and speed. Also, because FilmLight offers color calibration and grading tools to address other processes in the pipeline, there’s an opportunity for us to develop our relationship further in the future, as we continue to expand our Digital Intermediate services.”

FilmLight Commercial Director, Peter Stothart, said, “Every year, more films take advantage of Digital Intermediate processes. The trend is fairly consistent, and forward-looking post production facilities like Modern VideoFilm are providing the service and expertise to help their clients take advantage of these advancements.”

About the Northlight scanner

Northlight is a high quality, pin-registered digital film mastering scanner. Supporting 35mm, 65mm and 16mm formats, Northlight has been designed for the digital mastering of entire feature films, for current release and back catalogue preservation. Unlike telecine based machines, it provides image quality surpassing that of traditional pin registered film scanners used in special effects post production.
