Gorilla goes large on FilmLight

Broadcast post house boosts collaborative workflows with Baselight upgrades

Gorilla is the largest post-production facility in Wales, with a brand new purpose-built flagship facility in the creative hub of Cardiff Bay. As part of a facility-wide upgrade, Gorilla has boosted its finishing facilities by expanding its Baselight installation, including upgrading to the latest version of the system software.

At the heart of the facility is a large grading theatre equipped with a 20-foot projection screen as well as a Dolby Professional Reference Monitor. This is the home of Gorilla’s 4K and HDR-ready Baselight TWO grading suite, with valuable functionality and tools to boost both creativity and productivity. The busy facility also uses the FilmLight BLG (Baselight Linked Grade) format to enable a free flow of projects between editing and finishing for both broadcast media and film.

Gorilla houses around 70 edit suites across the main sites and other locations, many equipped with the Baselight for Avid plugin with a Slate control panel for finishing. This allows grading and editorial to take place in parallel, with the latest published grades rendered in real time on the Avid stations, so the editor can make updates and tweaks to the grade without leaving their familiar software. This is a huge boost for efficiency, a real bonus when working under the time pressures of broadcast production.

“Baselight is the best colour grading solution for the film and broadcast industry, and therefore the obvious choice for Gorilla as we continue to invest in the technology that provides the best results for our clients,” said Rhodri James, Technology Director at Gorilla. “We use Baselight to grade programmes across all genres, from fixed-rig documentaries to dramas, and the BLG workflow enables us to collaborate across suites, enabling the most efficient use of facilities and staff.”

James added, “FilmLight’s support and advice are always available when we are designing workflow and colour pipelines, making it easy for us to get on with the creative job in hand.”

Some of the projects graded on Baselight as part of a Gorilla finish include high profile drama series – Decline and Fall (Tiger Aspect for BBC) and Born to Kill (World Productions for CH4)”.

“Gorilla is a busy broadcast-focused post house, with proven experience in high-end productions. They needed intuitive, fast and efficient grading as part of their core offer to expand their portfolio and attract the best projects,” said Wolfgang Lempp, founder and CEO of FilmLight. “We are delighted that, as Gorilla grows in reputation, scope and success, it expands its Baselight installation even further. This is a great example of why we focus on workflows and collaborative tools as much as on the creativity we bring to grading and finishing.”
