VCC, Germany create multi-city ‘Virtual Grading’ with Baselight

FilmLight, a leading provider of digital film technology, announced today German Post production group VCC have installed the first multi control surface Baselight grading system.

VCC started working with FilmLight with their first Baselight purchase in 2003, installed at Optical Art in Hamburg. The recent investment consists of a 12Tbyte Baselight FOUR with two live Blackboard control surfaces, one in Hamburg and the other currently in Frankfurt.

Frank Schliefer, Director of Engineering explained “All the VCC sites around Germany – Hamburg, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, and Berlin – are connected via a 5 Gbit/s Fibre line. Using this we can route uncompressed SD and HD video, Gigabit Ethernet, and control. It makes economic and creative sense to share the Baselight cluster between two or more cities, allowing each facility to offer the same high performance grading, whilst matching the location and timing of the clients and projects”.

The decision to buy Baselight followed extensive evaluation of three other software grading systems. VCC found them limited in either performance, stability or operational design compared to Baselight and with the Blackboard control surface.

Andreas Teichert, Senior Colourist at VCC Hamburg comments “No limitations, best performance, and best support!…you’ve heard it hundred times before, but in this case it’s definitely true! A software based grading system with a well designed control surface combined with massive back-end power … now I have the freedom to focus entirely on the creative process of color grading, without worrying about the technology”.
