Anthony Minghella’s ‘Breaking and Entering’ graded on Baselight

Breaking and Entering opened across the UK on November 10th and is due for release in the US on December 8th. Directed by Anthony Minghella and starring Jude Law, Juliette Binoche and Robin Wright Penn it tells the story of a series of thefts – some criminal, some emotional. A successful Landscape Architect’s dealings with a young thief cause him to re-evaluate his life. The movie is set against the backdrop of a changing London whose geographical and cultural landscape is in flux.

UK-based VFX facility Framestore CFC handled the film’s DI (Digital Intermediate). The final grade was completed on the Baselight EIGHT by Senior Colourist and Head of Digital Grading Adam Glasman, under the supervision of the film’s DOP Benoît Delhomme.

Benoît wanted a completely different look to the film grade, illustrating two different worlds in London . Glasman explained “The sort of subtle look that Anthony and Benoit were looking for can be tricky. A more extreme grade gives you greater latitude. Much of our work on Breaking and Entering involved quite fine tuning.”

Digital grading gives filmmakers a much higher degree of control over delicate adjustments like those required on Breaking and Entering, and Baselight’s film style grading tool enabled Adam to make extremely accurate grading decisions and obtain the desired effect.

Adam had previously worked with Benoît Delhomme on The Proposition (2006) and with director Anthony Minghella on Cold Mountain (2003); two other features that were graded using Baselight. Adam commented “The clients were more than happy to return to us and having already used the system, they felt confident to carry out the work for their latest project”.

Breaking and Entering was scanned on FilmLight’s leading pin-registered scanner Northlight, previewed using industry recognised Truelight and conformed using a Baselight ONE at Framestore CFC.
