FilmLight’s Baselight Makes the Grade for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

FilmLight’s Baselight EIGHT was recently used to perform final colour grading for one of the year’s most eagerly anticipated feature films, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Truelight, FilmLight’s colour management tool was also used throughout the project for final DI and Dailies deliverables.

The Director of Photography Slawomir Idziak worked with Colour Supervisor Peter Doyle who developed a unique workflow for the film that allowed the colour space to be standardised at the outset of post production. It also allowed the film’s numerous and far flung visual effects vendors to monitor the progress of the final DI grade and incorporate that information into their work. Doyle discussed the process in a recent interview with Studio Daily.

“Harry Potter 5 was a demanding production in which Baselight was used both for dailies and the final grade. FilmLight worked with Peter Doyle to implement a forward thinking workflow where the grade of each shot could be refined throughout the 18 months of production” commented Martin Tlaskal, Head of Baselight Development at FilmLight.

A customized version of the Baselight GUI and interface was designed for the system at Leavesden which also includes 46TB of storage “Baselight’s new external scripting functionality was used to customise the UI to Peter’s desires, as well as allowing HP5 engineers to develop their own production specific tools” added Tlaskal.

The DI Theatre also featured a Barco DP100 projector and a 30-foot screen that facilitated A/B butterfly tests involving film prints and digitally projected imagery.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix debuted in London on 3 July and released nationwide on 11 July. Based on the novel by J.K .Rowling, the movie is directed by David Yates.
